how can i keep creatures from getting sucked into my filter?

I have a protien skimmer and a hang on the side filter for my saltwater tank and I have had a few things get sucked into them, including fish and anenomes. I am looking for a permanent solution to prevent this from happening. Right now I have a sponge covering the intakes of those items and they get dirty very quickly and are not permanent, does anybody have a suggestion?

I know what you mean about sponges, but they work. It may not be such an attractive solution, but you can also use a small piece of hose (as in women’s pantyhose) or netting (old aquarium net, or you can buy similar material in craft/fabric stores).
